DANCE 9-12
OFFICAL LVR DANCE WEBSITE:
Introduction
Dance courses at LVR are designed for students who enjoy the creative process, want to improve their dance skills and maintain a high level of physical fitness. All students are enrolled in mixed grade classes, and whenever possible, grouped with students with a similar level of dance experience. All classes build upon movement fundamentals: alignment, breathing, strength and balance, while introducing increasingly complex dance technique and choreography. Students will choreograph and perform for public presentations. Full participation is required in each class to ensure success.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will use the elements of movement (body, space, time, dynamics and relationship) with increasing degrees of refinement, complexity and variety;
- Students will use the creative process of exploration, selection, combination, refinement and reflection to compose movement sequences and dances;
- Students will participate in the presentation and performance of dance; and
- Students will demonstrate a growing awareness, understanding and appreciation of the histories, diversities, roles and influences of dance within society.
Material and Dance Attire
- A duotang/folder, pen and paper to be left in the studio;
- Bodysuits, tights, ballet shoes, and dance pants are highly recommended;
- Dance clothing should neither restrict movement nor prevent the teacher from seeing a student’s alignment. It must comply with the school dress code;
- Long hair must be pulled up;
- Any jewelry that hangs from the body or has sharp edges must be removed; and
- A water bottle is a must.
Class Schedule
We will be following a set class schedule. Ballet classes will be Mondays, Modern/Contemporary Dance on Tuesdays, the long blocks on Wednesdays and Thursdays will be reserved for theory and choreography, and finally, Fridays will be a combination of Street Jazz/Hip Hop. Please dress appropriately for each class.
Please note that we will be traveling to the Moving Centre for the long blocks.
Evaluation
Technique, participation, composition and knowledge are the skills which will be actively evaluated throughout this course. You will be asked to actively participate in the evaluation process through self, peer and group evaluation. This will allow you to become actively involved in and responsible for your progress in dance.
Approximate weighting:
Technique 25%
Participation 25%
Theory Assignments 25%
Choreography and Performance 25%
Homework and Assignments
Assignments are comprised of short choreography sequences, journal entries and theory assignments. Time is provided in class to complete the majority of each assignment. Unless otherwise specified, homework is due the class after it is assigned and will be collected and marked. Choreography projects and assignments are due at the BEGINNING of the block on the due date.
Attendance, Illness and Injury
If you are away it is your responsibility to find out what you missed. Because most of the learning for this course occurs during class time regular attendance is crucial. You must see the teacher to reschedule due dates for assignments and/or performances to avoid losing marks. Students may complete make-up assignments for initial excused absences. The ability to make-up work for excessive absences will be determined by individual circumstances in consultation with LVR administration.
Students who are ill, but are well enough to attend school, are capable of participating in class at the best of their abilities for that given day. Modifications to daily activities will be made to ensure the student’s safety and well-being. Likewise, an injured student is still expected to participate in activities that are deemed safe and do not put the given injury at further risk. Injured students are expected to modify activities and complete rehabilitative exercises during the in class time when they would not be able to participate in regular class routines.
Communication
As you well know being able to easily access information is one of the big keys to staying caught up, doing well and avoiding miscommunications. To this end the Dance Department has started a web page. We're online at http://lvrdance.pbworks.com There you will find extra copies of course outlines, assignments, order forms, rehearsal schedules as well as other information. Any parent or student needing to contact me throughout the semester is welcome to do so via phone 250.352.5538 or email jmacmillan@sd8.bc.ca. Please keep in mind that I will respond as soon as possible during regular business hours.
Expectations
- No food, gum or outdoor shoes are permitted in the studio. Water bottles are welcome;
- Arrive on time, with the necessary supplies and in the appropriate attire;
- Respect others and the space. This means listening when a fellow classmate or the teacher is speaking. Remember, respect cannot exist when put downs do. It also means that if you move something in the room, you put it back where it belongs before you leave; and
- Do your best!
Fire Drills
Exit the building quickly and quietly. Always stay together with your class.
If you follow the suggestions above we will all enjoy and learn from our time together.
Welcome!
KOOTENAY LAKE SKILLS ACADEMIES
LVR DANCE ACADEMY
OFFICAL LVR DANCE WEBSITE:
Introduction
The purpose of the Dance Academy is to build each student's knowledge base and dance technique. To that end the classes will be intensive and will focus on alignment, strength, flexibility, use of breath, and musicality primarily through ballet and modern dance technique. Students will broaden their knowledge base through active participation in classes and seminars.
Class Schedule
The students enrolled in the Dance Academy will have a combination of ballet, modern, lyrical and street jazz classes. A typical class will be a combination of stretch and core strengthening work, barre, barre a terre, movement across the floor and combinations. Once our classes are running smoothly we will begin building a repertoire for the show.
**Please note that we will be traveling to the Moving Centre for the long blocks.**
Seminars
Seminars will take place periodically throughout the term. Seminar topics may include food and nutrition, injury prevention, audition preparation, summer programs, cross training, university preparation, as well as a variety of other topics. Seminars are sometimes replaced by guest teachers. In the past students have worked with Liz Maluta, David La Hay, Dancers Dancing, Josh Beamish, Michelle Seminoff, Damien Moroney as well as a number of other specialists.
Dance Attire
Ballet
Black sleeveless body suits are required. Tights must be pink. Students may use a full or split sole ballet shoe. All long hair must be pinned back and tied up. Black bike shorts are permitted.
Modern/Lyrical
Any solid colored body suit is acceptable. Dance pants, preferably black, must not inhibit the teacher from seeing the student’s placement. Modern dance classes will be barefoot.
Street Jazz
Students may choose to wear any combination of dance attire for this class. All attire must comply with the school’s dress code. Jazz shoes are highly recommended but not mandatory. Running shoes are required.
It is important to ensure that each student adhere to this dress code. The proper attire makes it easier for the teacher to both make and see corrections on the students.
If the studio is cold, students will be encouraged to layer their clothing during the warm-up.
Costume Costs
Students and parents should note that costumes are required for the show. A maximum of one hundred dollars will cover costume costs. In the past we have borrowed, combined and re-used costumes to keep costs down. If costume costs are prohibitive to a family for any reason, options for rental or costume buy back will be available on an individual basis.
Assessment
In addition to regular feedback in class students will receive anecdotal assessment at the end of each term. This assessment will not be in the form of a letter grade but in a progress report and work habit pertinent to each student’s improvement and ability.
Students in grades 9-12 must let Mrs. MacMillan know immediately if they are planning to challenge for credit in Dance 9-12. They will be required to complete theory assignments in addition to their studio classes to complete their course of study. Evaluation forms, based on the prescribed learning outcomes for Dance 9-12, are forwarded to the office at LVR after the completion of the course.
Attendance, Illness and Injury
Please notify Mrs. MacMillan prior to an absence via email or phone whenever possible. Students are required to catch up on missed choreography and theory work prior to their next class.
