When students study music they interact
with sound, simultaneously engaging mind,
body, and spirit. Through creating,
performing, listening to, and responding to
music, students experience the ways in
which music evokes and conveys thoughts,
images, and feelings.

Music education makes an essential and
unique contribution to students’ lifelong
intellectual, physical, and emotional
development. Music also contributes to a
healthier society through shared activities
that respect and reflect the diversity of
human experience.

2010 Band Tour Proposal

What is MusicFest Canada:
“Entering into its 37th year, MusicFest Canada brings thousands of students and educators from across the country together, over a one-week period, to celebrate music excellence. Not only does MusicFest Canada showcase the talent and knowledge of esteemed clinicians and adjudicators from across North America, it also showcases Canada's own landscape by hosting the festival in a different metropolitan city each year.
Initially founded in 1972 as the Canadian Stage Band Festival (CSBF), the festival was a major force in the development of the stage band (an institutionally-based jazz 'big band') in Canadian high schools and universities. The CSBF added vocal and concert band components in 1981 and 1986 respectively. MusicFest Canada, originally introduced in 1987, embraced the CSBF and what had come to be identified by 1986 as the Canadian Vocal Festival and Canadian Concert Band Festival.
Since its conception in 1972, MusicFest Canada has enriched the level of music education across the nation, while providing Canadian students a truly measurable goal: that of musical excellence”.(MusicFest Canada)

Over the course of a year, tens of thousands of music students across Canada compete for the privilege of advancing to compete at the national level at MusicFest Canada. At regional festivals across Canada, only the top two ensembles from every division are granted invitations to attend. This year, we qualified two ensembles to attend MusicFest Canada 2009; Jazz Band B and the Junior Jazz Combo. However, with the short notice and expense to travel to Brampton, it was decided to postpone attendance until 2010.  As these invitations are usually open only for two years,  I’ve asked MusicFest co-ordinators to also include in the 2010 invitations two other groups that were granted invitations for 2009; Jazz Band A and the Senior Concert Band. This request has been granted by MusicFest so we now have 4 ensembles in position to compete at nationals which will be held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa in mid-May next year.

The LV Rogers Concert Band and A Band attended MusicFest Canada in Ottawa in 2006 and this was a very successful and rewarding experience for all. By choosing to participate at the national level, students are provided with opportunities that are not always available elsewhere. Success at festivals such as MusicFest opens doors of opportunity for succeeding students.

1.A parent’s committee needs to be struck to handle surveying of interest levels, fund raising and other organizational work.

2.A survey of students/parents to determine the viability of the tour.

3.Determination of the tour duration.

4.If it appears that the tour is not feasible for all, which groups would go if any?

5.If no ensembles are interested in attending, what are the alternatives for touring in 2010?

As it stands today, these are the LV Rogers music ensembles that are qualified for MusicFest 2010:
Senior Concert Band (gr.10-12), Senior Jazz Band (A Band), Junior Jazz Band (B Band) and the Junior Jazz Combo (Danica Long, Jake Van der Holt, Alex Bullen)

Without the support of the students and parents, no such endeavor such as this can proceed.
Thank you for your interest!

The biggest challenges faced with an LVR ensemble attending and competing at MusicFest, are the logistics and expenses in getting to Ottawa from Nelson. I am currently looking into reasonable cost estimates for the trip and have the following information for you to consider:

WestJet                                          Kelowna to Ottawa                    $850.00 taxes in (estimate)

Ellison Travel                                    Hotel, MusicFest Registrations, tours          $700 approx

Spending Money                                                                 $?

We will ask that breakfast and supper be incorporated into the costs of the tour. This makes for a fairly effective way to feed the students on the road and satisfy food requests. Students would still be responsible for lunches.
At this point, there are several things that need to be found out before a final decision can be made to proceed.
