LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS, BURSARIES AND AWARDS
These awards are generally presented during the Graduation Ceremonies at the end of the year to members of the Grade 12 class.
The scholarships, bursaries, and awards available at L.V. Rogers Secondary School are described below. The financial recognition of student achievement and the support for students continuing on to post-secondary education is in thanks to local individuals, businesses, and organizations.

ANGELO MASTROBUONO BURSARY
Criteria: Consideration will be based upon financial need.
History: In memory of Angelo Mastrobuono, a City of Nelson employee, killed accidentally on the job. Angelo will be remembered for his great work ethic and his dedication to learning.
BARRY CRISPIN MEMORIAL - SPONSORED BY H & R BLOCK
Criteria: Students pursuing their education in the field of business.
History: In memory of Barry Crispin, a former student of L.V. Rogers.
BRIAN McGRATH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY
Criteria: Consideration will be given based on financial need.
History: In memory of Brian McGrath, a former teacher at L.V. Rogers.
CAITLYND PIDERMAN BURSARY
Criteria: Student is trying to overcome health challenges, or student must be an athlete that shows superior determination, effort & commitment to sport.
History: Caitlynd was a 2006 LVR graduate who loved basketball.
CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN BURSARY
Criteria: Top female student. A need for financial assistance may be considered.
COLUMBIA POWER CORPORATION BURSARY
History: Established in 1999 by Columbia Basin Power Projects.
FORTIS BC
Criteria: Student must be entering post-secondary program in areas related to electrician, millwright, powerline technology, electrical engineering etc.
GENERO/DAVIS - ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR
Criteria: Preference given to candidate having a relative in Eastern Star or the Masonic Order.
History: Sponsored by Rose City Chapter #28.
GYRO CLUB OF NELSON
Criteria: Strong academics.
HUESTIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Student has a strong interest in sports, music or art and they reflect determination and humility. Financial need is also significant.
History: Established in 1986 in memory of Bob Huestis Jr. He is remembered as a unique individual with a wide range of interests including sports, art, and music.
ITALIAN CANADIAN SOCIETY
Criteria: Preference to member of the Italian Club.
I.O.D.E. SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES
Criteria: Strong academics, music students, financial need.
KIWANIS CLUB OF NELSON
Criteria: Preference given to member. Candidate is a student who excels at academics, and displays good community spirit and involvement.
History: In memory of Stan Livingstone who was a Charter Secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Nelson. Stan was also secretary of the Nelson School Board (and the Livingstone scholarship became an annual award of the Nelson Kiwanis Club in his memory).
KOOTENAY LAKE DENTAL CLINIC ASSOCIATION
Criteria: Interest in education or dental career. Holding an academic or science background.
KOOTENAY LAKE PRINCIPALS’ & VICE-PRINCIPALS’ ASSOCIATION
Criteria: A minimum grade point average of 3.2 over your best seven courses.
LAUREL BEST MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Recognition in academics and service.
LIONS CLUB OF NELSON SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: One male and one female scholarship awarded.
LOUIS & MARGUERITE SANTOR BURSARY
Criteria: High academic achievement; furthering education in the field of medicine, including veterinary medicine. Preference may be given to a student with evidence of financial need.
L.V. ROGERS GRAD CLASS OF 2009
Criteria: An active member of the grad committee who has made a substantial contribution.
MIKE SEDLBAUER MEMORIAL BURSARY
Criteria: Male soccer player who was a member of the senior boys’ team.
MOUNTAIN WEST STUDIOS
Criteria: Involvement in Yearbook, LVTV or graphic design.
NEIL KERR AWARD
Criteria: Student leadership award.
NELSON HIGH SCHOOL REUNION 1944-48
Criteria: Pursuing further education.
History: Established in 1991 by the reunion committee.
NELSON PILOTS’ ASSOCIATION
Criteria: Pursuing a career in the aviation industry (air crew, aeronautical engineer, aircraft maintenance, etc.).
NELSON DISTRICT TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION
Criteria: Preference given to one or more deserving candidates proceeding to technology, university, college, or vocational training.
NELSON MASONIC LODGE
Criteria: One male and one female based on citizenship, group/club activities, fine arts involvement; C+ average.
ORMOND FAMILY BURSARY
Criteria: High degree of excellence in fine arts with first consideration to a theatre arts student.
PHARMASAVE SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: A student that is interested in sciences and has demonstrated community service.
RANDY PEREPOLKIN BURSARY
Criteria: Must be entering a music program with preference given to a guitar or voice student.
ROULSTON COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
Criteria: To a deserving student who has been involved in community service activities.
STROMSTEAD SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Furthering his/her education in a science or mathematics related field. Candidate demonstrates an interest and knowledge in the area of information technology.
History: Established in 1997 by Edward and Gladys Stromstead for L.V. Rogers students furthering their studies.
T.A.S.K. BURSARY
Criteria: This achievement award is for students with special needs.
T.A.S.K. SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Students pursuing their education in a field relating to working with children with special needs.
VAN HELLEMOND SPORT SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Applicants who have given sports assistance to their community.
KENNY AND DENNIS ZEABIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Applicants who are furthering their education in language study.
History: Kenneth Zeabin was born in Nelson in 1971. He believed in equality and that “life must go on”. He enjoyed life to the fullest and fought bravely his battle against muscular dystrophy. Kenny passed away on May 16, 1989.
Criteria: Must have been a student at A. I. Collinson Elementary School.
Criteria: Male. Priority given to students intending to enter the Ministry of the United Church, students intending to enter the Ministry of another Protestant denomination. May be given to one or more (but not more than 3) students.
History: Established 1953 by James Hamilton Allen, in perpetuity for educational purposes.
Criteria: Proceeding with post-secondary education in the fields of natural history, environmental studies or parks management.
History: Carter and Bing were two avid outdoorsmen with respect for and appreciation of the wilderness. In 1996, both men gave their lives in the pursuit of safety for others. John by an avalanche while patrolling ski runs and Bill by a plane crash while searching for a downed plane.
Criteria: Applicant must have attended Blewett School for a minimum of one school year (excluding Kindergarten).
History: Established by the Blewett School community in 1980 as a tribute to Mr. Bragagnolo,
who was the Principal at Blewett from 1966 to 1980.
Criteria: Service and leadership to the community and strong academics.
Criteria: Son or daughter of a member of CUPE 748. C+ average during final year. Attendance and punctuality, school participation and community involvement are considered.
History: stablished in 1995 for deserving students who are sons or daughters of CUPE local 748 members and who are graduating from a high school within School District #8.
Criteria: One male and one female furthering their education in non-academic studies, (i.e. trade school, business administration etc.)
History: In memory of Delane H. Reed, a Past President and long time active member of Nelson Lodge #22.
Criteria: Athletic, academic, and leadership qualities both in the school and in the community.
History: In memory of Ernie Gare, a sports enthusiast and coach who was very active in the Nelson community.
Criteria: To worthy students who plan to continue their post-secondary education to include college, university, trade, vocational or artistic training and private music lessons.
History: Established in 1991 by Jim Fraser, a teacher at Nelson High School in the name of his wife Margaret and himself.
Criteria: Awarded to a student with a high academic standing who plans to continue their post secondary education with consideration given to financial need.
History: Georgia Ethel McKeown a long time teacher in the Nelson area
Criteria: Must be involved in Music. History: Established in memory of Amy Ferguson and the United Church Boys Choir.
Criteria: Preference given to local player of the West Kootenay Wildcats or the Nelson Leaf hockey teams.
Criteria: Pursuing post secondary education in an area related to environmental studies and has a solid record of environmental activities.
Criteria: Pursuing post secondary education and whose parent(s) are active co-op members.
Criteria: Awarded to a student interested in journalism, communications or a similar post secondary education field.
History: Established in 2002 by Nelson Becker, editor of Kootenay Express.
GRADE 12 GRADUATION PROGRAM EXAMINATION SCHOLARSHIPS
The Grade 12 Graduation Program Examinations Scholarships reward graduating students for academic excellence in their Grade 12 Provincial Exams. The Ministry of Education will grant $1000 scholarships redeemable by enrolling fulltime at a post secondary institution.
To be eligible for a Grade 12 Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship, a student:
If you are awarded a scholarship, a voucher will be mailed to you by late August or early September.
DOGWOOD - DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIPS
The Dogwood District Awards Program rewards students for excellence in the areas of Fine Arts, Second Languages, Applied Skills, or Physical Activity (i.e. art, band, textiles, foods, mechanics, technology, P.E., media arts, French, Spanish etc.) and that plan to pursue study in that general field. It requires a presentation to a panel where the student displays and discusses their superior achievement in the aforementioned areas. These presentations will take place at LVR on Wednesday, May 12th, 2010. You will be notified of the time and place if you are short-listed. If you win, a cheque for $500 will be mailed to you in October and a voucher for $500 will be sent in November.
NOTE: A student can now receive both a Dogwood District Award and a Grade 12 Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship.
POST SECONDARY ENTRANCE AWARDS
ALL post-secondary institutions offer entrance scholarships and bursaries. In order to qualify for an entrance scholarship from a post-secondary institution you must have applied to and plan on attending that post-secondary institution in the fall. Information and often applications are available in the counsellors’ offices. You can also check university and/or college viewbooks and websites for details. NOTE: Applicants should make sure that they follow all instructions very carefully and meet the required deadlines.
AFFILIATION SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES
Affiliation awards specify certain requirements, such as membership in an organization, affiliation with a union, specific firm or industry.
A scholarship is based on academic achievement; a bursary is awarded based on financial need. Use the database provided by the counsellors when researching. All applications can be obtained from the counselling office. Please check the criteria very carefully.
HINT: Check at your worksite (i.e. Wal-Mart, Safeway, etc.) to see if scholarships are available from your employer.
PASSPORT TO EDUCATION
Passport to Education awards are given to top students. Schools determine which students will receive those awards following Ministry of Education protocols. These awards have the following values for students graduating in 2010:
Grade 10 $250
Grade 11 $250
Grade 12 $500
Students may redeem those credits within five years from the expected date of graduation at any post-secondary institution approved for Canada Student Loans by the Ministry of Education.
Students who have received passport stamps may pick them up at the main office after graduation. These are usually available near the end of August.

Scholarships and bursaries are monies that local service groups and businesses donate to you. Award winners are strongly encouraged to demonstrate appropriate courtesy and write the donator/group a personal ‘thank you’ note to expressing their appreciation for the donator's support. If you require proper mailing and other contact information please see Ms. Deb Smith in the counselling office.
Criteria: Preference will be to a member in good standing of the Credit Union or Insurance subsidiary, Allard Insurance.
1. Demonstrating strong leadership abilities, OR
2. Achieving academic excellence in all areas of study, OR
3. Exemplifying community spirit.
Criteria: Child or grandchild of an active or retired N.D.T.A. member. Intended for university, college or trade schools.
Criteria: Students involved in sport in some capacity. This may be as a player, referee, coach or administrator.
Criteria: Attending a post-secondary institution in the field of forestry, environment or wood design. Candidate has demonstrated an interest in forest management or the environment through community activities, forest-related education classes or woodwork.
Criteria: For students whose post secondary plans are related to the automotive field. Would also consider an active member of the LVR Drag Team.
Criteria: Good academic standing and have actively participated in U.S.C.C. events or progress.
Criteria: Strong academics and evidence of leadership and service to school or community.
