March 5, 2019.
We’ve seen a steady increase in vaping and cannabis use at LV Rogers—both inside the school (washrooms, change rooms, and stairwells) and outside on school property, too. This concerns us for two reasons:
· Concerns for student health and well-being and the impact on learning and safety
· Students are not to be in possession of vapes or cannabis, or to use e-cigarette devices such as vapes/juuls as per School District 8 Board Policies #250 Tobacco & Electronic Smoking Devices, #310 Code of Conduct, or #251 Cannabis.
I’ve attached two educational leaflets that may help in your discussion with your child:
1. What You Need to Know & How To Talk To Your Kids About Vaping (www.drugfree.org)
2. Ten Questions About Cannabis Use and Your Teen (teenmentalhealth.org)
In summary, vaping or use of other e-cigarettes or possession/use of cannabis are violations of District Policy and our School Code of Conduct. Infractions will be dealt with at the school level immediately through confiscation and suspension until an intake conversation with parents/guardians and the student can be arranged. Subsequent breaches may be dealt with at the School District level, and may include referrals to counselling or other supports.
Thank you for your cooperation, understanding, and patience in continuing to make LV Rogers a healthy, safe and respectful environment for everyone. Please do not hesitate to contact me or one of our Vice-Principals, Mr. Jordon Konken (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Mr. Ron Sherman (email@example.com) should you have any questions or concerns.
