Type One Community Awards

Type 1 Community

Each of the awards below are available for students to apply for in one simple online application.  Before you do your application, please carefully read each of the bursaries, scholarships and award descriptions to see which you may be most eligible for.  This way when you fill out your application, you can provide the necessary information.

Students are required to be full time students at LVR/DESK, taking at least 5/8 courses.

ABORIGINAL EDUCATION AWARD

AMOUNT: $1000 (2 awards for LVR)
CRITERIA: Awarded to a student identified with aboriginal ancestry.

Award recipient is decided by LV Rogers. Award payment is administered by School Board Office.

 

​BRIAN McGRATH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY 

AMOUNT: Determined by Osprey Foundation
CRITERIA: Recipient will be of a positive character reflecting humility, determination and honesty. Consideration given to basic scholastic achievement and financial need.
HISTORY: In memory of Brian McGrath, a former teacher at L.V. Rogers.

CAITLYND PIDERMAN BURSARY

AMOUNT: Determined by Osprey Foundation
CRITERIA: This award is offered to students who are trying to overcome health challenges, or the student must be an athlete that shows superior determination, effort and commitment to sports.
HISTORY: Caitlynd was a 2006 L.V. Rogers graduate who loved basketball.

CARTER/BING BURSARY

AMOUNT: $500 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Positive character reflecting humility, determination and honesty, proven constructive commitment to environmental issues: demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in natural history, nature interpretation, wildlife education, parks management or related field. Financial need will be considered.

HISTORY: John Carter and Bill Bing were two avid outdoorsmen with respect for and appreciation of the wilderness. In 1996, both men gave their lives in pursuit of safety for others. John by an avalanche while patrolling ski runs and Bill by a plane crash while searching for a downed plane.

CITY OF NELSON EMPLOYEES MEMORIAL AWARD

AMOUNT: Determined by Osprey Foundation
CRITERIA:  This award is offered to children of City of Nelson Employees permanent positions with greater than 5 years of service. If no applicants with this criterion apply this award is to be offered to any student who demonstrates a balance of academics, athletics, leadership, and community oriented.

COLUMBIA POWER CORPORATION BURSARY

AMOUNT: $500 (1 award)

CRITERIA:  Will be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution within one year of graduating. Has demonstrated excellence in achievement during senior year. This does not necessarily mean achieving the highest marks. The Bursary aims to reward a student who has worked hard and demonstrated a desire to excel, which may include non-academic achievements such as volunteering. Intends to use the money towards the purchase of books and/or payment of tuition.

​DELANE H. REED - FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES #22 SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $500 (2 awards)

CRITERIA: One male and one female furthering their education in non-academic studies (trade school, business administration, etc.).
HISTORY: In memory of Delane H. Reed, a Past President and long time active member of Nelson Lodge #22.

ELIZABETH WALLACH SCHOLARSHIP (Canadian Federation of University Women Nelson & District Club)

AMOUNT: $1000 (1 award)
CRITERIA: A young woman entering post secondary education, good academic standing, community involvement and financial need. Please contact Cathy Luegner, President for more information at nelsoncfuw@gmail.com

FRASER, JAMES A. & MARGARET MEMORIAL BURSARY

AMOUNT: $400 (2 awards) for 2020-21

CRITERIA:  Rotational schedule within the District. Awarded to a well-rounded student, with academic achievement participating in school & community activities; with good attitude, sportsmanship and work habits. Financial need may be considered.

HISTORY: Established in 1991 by Jim Fraser, a teacher at Nelson High School in the name of his wife Margaret and himself.

GRADS BC PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO EXCELLENCE IN MEDIA AWARD

AMOUNT: $500 (1 award)

CRITERIA:  A student pursuing post secondary education in media - photography, video or graphics/design.

Award recipient is decided by LV Rogers. Award payment is administered by LV Rogers.

 

HARRIS & CO-J ANDERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $200 (1 award) for 2020/21

CRITERIA:  Rotational schedule within the District. Enrolled in Law 11 or 12 (or an alternate course if Law course not offered) who excel in this study and intend to enroll in post-secondary education at a recognized Institute, College or University in BC.

HORIE FAMILY BURSARY 

AMOUNT: $1000 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Student is proceeding with post-secondary education in media/visual arts and has a demonstrated financial need.

HUESTIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Amount: $350.00 (1 award)
CRITERIA: Attributes: positive character reflecting humility and determination, commitment to pursue highter education, need for financial assistance, strong interest in sports, music, art or cartooning.
HISTORY: Established in 1986 in memory of Bob Huestis Jr, who is remembered as a unique individual with a wide range of interests including sports, art and music.

IODE (Kokanee Chapter)  FINE/PERFORMING ARTS, TECHNOLOGY, TRADES AWARD

Amount: $1500.00 (3 award)
CRITERIA: Students applying for Fine or Performing Arts, Technology or Trade Programs for the coming Academic year. State the name(s) of school(s) and Program you are applying to. Please state if you have already received conditional acceptance.

Award recipient is decided by the Donor. Award payment is administered by the Donor.

 

JAMES HAMILTON ALLEN SCHOLARSHIP, NELSON UNITED CHURCH

AMOUNT: $500-1500 (1 or 2 awards)
CRITERIA:  Preferably male students who have completed grade 12 and expressed the intention of acquiring higher education at a Canadian college or university. Preference will be given to students under the preceding clause in the following order: 1. Students intending to enter the Ministry of the United Church of Canada, 2. Students intending to enter the Ministry of any other Protestant denomination, 3. To other students.

JESSIE ANN WARD BURSARY

AMOUNT: $500 (1 award)
CRITERIA:  Awarded to a deserving student in the Fine Arts Program as determined by the Administration and Staff of LV Rogers.

KOOTENAY ADVOCACY NETWORK TASK 

AMOUNT: $250 (1 award)
CRITERIA: This award is for a student with diverse abilities that succeeded in graduation from grade 12.

KOOTENAY ADVOCACY NETWORK TASK 

AMOUNT: $1000 (1 award)

CRITERIA:  This award is for a student attending post secondary education in the field of Special Ed, CCSW Program, ECE, Social Work, etc helping those with diverse abilities.

KOOTENAY LAKE DENTAL SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $500.00 (1 award)

CRITERIA:   A student who excels both academically and in the community.

KOOTENAY LAKE PRINCIPALS’ & VICE-PRINCIPALS’ ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $500

CRITERIA: A minimum grade point average of 3.2 over your best seven courses. 
 

KOOTENAY LAKE WEST RETIRED TEACHERS

AMOUNT: $400 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Student continuing in occupational/career/trade programs. 


KOOTENAY SAVINGS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION BURSARY

AMOUNT: $1500 (1 award)

CRITERIA: To a deserving student who has demonstrated satisfactory academic performance proceeding into a technology, university, college or vocational school on a full time basis. The student or student’s parents must be a member of Kootenay Savings.

LEADERSHIP RECOGNITION SCHOLARSHIP – COVENANT CHURCH

AMOUNT: $1500 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Awarded to a student leader who exercises transformational leadership in his/her community by modeling a commitment to- listening with care to others, growth and success of others, building community and personal growth, accountability and integrity. Must be 15-19, meet grad requirements, enrolled in SD8 and planning on attending post secondary.

LIONS CLUB OF NELSON SCHOLARSHIP
AMOUNT: $1000 each (2 awards)

CRITERIA:  One male and one female.  Preference given to a son or daughter of a Nelson Lions Club member. Consideration will also be given to a good school record in a variety of subjects (C+ average) as well as evidence of leadership, community service and/or involvement in the arts.

LOIS MCKINNON LEGACY FUND

AMOUNT: Determined by Osprey Foundation
CRITERIA:  Pending criteria information from Osprey Foundation.

Award payment is administered by School Board Office.
 

MASONIC LODGE SCHOLARSHIP 

AMOUNT: Determined by Osprey Foundation
CRITERIA: Osprey Foundations designates awards to be issued per school and the school decides on the deserving student with Masonic relationship if possible.

MASTROBUONO BURSARY 

AMOUNT: Determined by Osprey Foundation
CRITERIA: Consideration will be based upon financial need, rather than academics.
HISTORY: In memory of Angelo Mastrobuono, a City of Nelson employee, killed accidentally on the job. Angelo is remembered for his great work ethic and his dedication to learning.

NELSON AND DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT:  $500 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Student pursuing business related studies or similar post secondary studies.

NELSON AND DISTRICT TEACHERS ASSOCIATION
AMOUNT: $500 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Student who is interested in education or human resources at university, college or trade school.


NELSON HIGH SCHOOL REUNION BURSARY 

AMOUNT: $400 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Awarded to a deserving student as determined by the administration and staff of LVR
HISTORY: Established in 1991 by the reunion committee.

Award payment is administered by School Board Office.

 

NELSON MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $300 EACH (2 awards)

CRITERIA: Applicants must have been a NMHA registrant and must present proof of post secondary enrollment and payment to receive the award.

Recipient decided by the donor. Award payment is administered by donor.


NELSON PILOTS’ ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP 

AMOUNT: $400 (1 award)
CRITERIA: Pursuing a career in the aviation industry (e.g. air crew, aeronautical engineer, aircraft maintenance). In the event there are no qualifying students in any one year, two scholarships may be issued the following year.

NELSON ROAD KINGS SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $750 (2 awards)
CRITERIA: For students whose post secondary plans are related to the automotive field. This may include mechanics, body repair and sales as well as welding, electrical and millwright/machinist.

Recipient decided by the donor. Award payment is administered by LV Rogers.

 

ORMOND FAMILY BURSARY 

AMOUNT: $500 (1 award)
CRITERIA: Awarded to a student who has shown a high degree of excellence in a Fine Arts Course. Selection in the following order: 1. Theatre Arts, 2. Music/Band, 3. Literacy, 4. Art.

SANTOR BURSARY

AMOUNT: $500 (1 award)
CRITERIA: Furthering education in the field of medicine, including veterinary medicine. Must demonstrate high academic achievement. Preference may be given to student with evidence of financial need. In honour of Louis & Marguerite Santor.

STROMSTEAD BURSARY 

AMOUNT: $400 (1 award)
CRITERIA: Pursuing further studies in a science and/or mathematics related field, demonstrated interest and knowledge in the area of information technology.
HISTORY: Established in 1997 by Edward and Gladys Stromstead for L.V. Rogers students furthering their studies.

TELUS AMBASSADORS BURSARY

AMOUNT:  $1000 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Preference given to applicant with immediate family connection to Telus/BC Tel (current or retired). If no family, min. C+ avg., leadership, community service and/or involvement in the arts, enrolling in post-secondary institution.

Recipient decided by the donor. Award payment is administered by LV Rogers.

 

WLWP WEALTH PLANNERS AWARD

AMOUNT:  $500 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Students that are interested in pursuing a career in the financial industry, business sector, or mental health field. Preference will be given to those who plan to attend a post secondary institution to study these disciplines, or those who already have started to collect experience in them.

ZEABIN MEMORIAL BURSARY

AMOUNT: $400 (1 award)
CRITERIA: To continue post-secondary education in language study.
HISTORY: Kenneth Zeabin was born in Nelson in 1971. He believed in equality and that “life must go on”.  He enjoyed life to the fullest and fought bravely his battle against muscular dystrophy
