Type Three District Bursary, Scholarships and Awards are a mixture of opportunities for a variety of students with  skills, career interests and experience. Review all the information below and decide which ones are most suitable for you to apply for - they are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference. 

DEADLINES for district awards are to hand paper copies to the secretary Arlene by April 4th, 2025   after a review by counsellors & admin applications will be submitted to district by April 11th, 2025

Bill Arishenkoff Trades Scholarship

 

Amount: $500

Criteria: Bill Arishenkoff, the founder of Bill’s Heavy Duty, was a supportive and helpful businessperson. His legacy is honoured with this scholarship, awarded to students pursuing a career in the commercial Transport Field/Trades. Students entering the trades of truck and transport mechanic, heavy duty mechanic, auto body technician, automotive refinishing technician, commercial truck driver are eligible for applying. Preference will be given to students pursuing a career as a Commercial Transport Technician, Heavy Duty Technician, Commercial Vehicle Driver (Class 1), or Auto Body Technician/Refinisher.

Award recipients are decided by donor with input from the school. 

Award payment is administered by the school district board office.

 

Bragagnolo Bursary 

Amount: $1400

Criteria:The Bragagnolo Bursary was established by the Blewett School community in 1980 as a tribute to Mr. Bragagnolo. He was the principal at Blewett Elementary from 1966 to 1980. The bursary is awarded annually to a deserving student who has enrolled in a post-secondary institution. - A graduating student from LV Rogers who has attended Blewett Elementary for a minimum of 1 school year (excluding Kindergarten/Grade one). - The successful candidate must be continuing his/her education (colleges and technical schools are included).A need for financial assistance will be considered. All supporting documents including a reference letter need to be included in your application.

APPLICATION: Bragagnolo Bursary Application

City of Nelson Employee Scholarship

Amount: $1000

Criteria:This award is offered to children of City of Nelson Employees in permanent positions with greater than 5 years of service. If no applicants with this criterion apply this award is to be offered to any student who demonstrates a balance of academics, athletics, leadership, and community oriented.  All supporting documents including a reference letter need to be included in your application.

David Thompson Student Arts Award Fund 

Amount: $850

Criteria: The David Thompson Student Award is available to local-area (West Kootenay) students residing in the catchment of SD8 pursuing degrees in Fine Arts - theatre, creative writing, music, performing, dance and film at a post secondary British Columbia degree-granting institution. Eligible students must demonstrate a combination of artistic abilities and accomplishments, academic potential, and financial need. All supporting documents including a reference letter need to be included in your application.

APPLICATION: David Thompson Art Award Application

Award recipients are decided by District staff.   Award payment is administered by SBO.

District Dogwood Authority Award  Amount: $1250 

Criteria: The SD8 Kootenay Lake District Dogwood Authority Award recognizes graduating BC students for achievement in their chosen area of interest or strength. . To be eligible for a District/Authority Scholarship, a student must provide evidence of outstanding achievement in ONE chosen area of interest from Fine Arts, Applied Design Skills & Technology, Technical and Trades, Community Service, Indigenous Language & Culture, Physical Activity or International Languages. Students need to fill out the application below as well as provide all supporting documents,  including a reference form, see below. Students will be invited to a district dogwood presentation time in early May where a capstone presentation will be made in front of district staff.

Dr. Amanda Assay Memorial Award

Amount: $300

Criteria: The Dr. Amanda Asay Memorial Award is in honour of the Prince George legend who tragically lost her life in a skiing accident in Nelson, BC. The purpose of the fund is to create a legacy in the name of Amanda Asay with the creation of this annual award. The Dr. Amanda Asay Memorial Award is one bursary to be allocated to a student attending post secondary school from School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake). Preference will be given to female students, going to post-secondary education, who participate in hockey, ringette, baseball or softball. Students need to fill out the application below as well as provide all supporting documents,  including a reference letter, see below.

Dr. Christine and Michael Perkins Fine Arts Award

Amount: $250

Criteria: The Dr. Christine and Michael Perkins Fine Arts Award is available to local-area (West Kootenay) students residing in the catchment of SD8 pursuing degrees in Performing or Visual Arts - theatre, creative writing, music, performing, dance and film at a post-secondary, degree-granting institution. Eligible students must demonstrate a combination of artistic abilities and accomplishments, academic potential, and financial need. Applicants must demonstrate enthusiasm, innovation and excellence through their portfolio and application materials. Students need to fill out the application below as well as provide all supporting documents,  including a reference letter, see below. 

APPLICATION: Dr. Christine Perkins and Michael Perkins Fine Arts Award 

Award recipients are decided by District staff.

Award payment is administered by SBO.

Dr. Christine Perkins Human Rights Award 

Amount: $250

Criteria: For an Indigenous or Inclusion graduate who plans to pursue a career in education, law or human rights. Eligible students must demonstrate a combination of artistic abilities and accomplishments, academic potential, and financial need. Applicants must demonstrate enthusiasm, innovation and excellence through their portfolio and application materials. Students need to fill out the application below as well as provide all supporting documents,  including a reference letter, see below. 

APPLICATION: Dr. Christine Perkins Human Rights Award  

Award recipients are decided by District staff.

Georgia Ethel McKeown Bursary

Amount: $1000

Criteria: This award is open to all SD8 Students and is to be awarded to students with high academic standing and financial need.Students need to fill out the application below as well as provide all supporting documents,  including a reference letter, see below.

Kootenay Area Skilled Trades Award 

Amount: varies $500 to $1000

Criteria: Students applying for this bursary are asked to write a one-page overview of their short-term goals and how this will help them achieve their long-term goals. In this, include a description, how the skills and attributes that make a successful trades person are used currently in their life. Bursary candidates are also asked to include in their application a 3D object designed and built by them, constructed of paper and/or recycled material with no dimension larger than 12”/30cm. the object should represent a solution to a problem or a unique design of an object. Successful candidates will anticipate serving the community of the Kootenays with their Construction Trades Skills and career. Students need to fill out the application below as well as provide all supporting documents,  including a reference letter, see below.
