Type Two Community Bursary, Scholarships and Awards are a mixture of opportunities for a variety of students with different backgrounds, experiences, skills and community connections. Please read each of the descriptions below and decide which ones are most suitable for you to apply for - they are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference. Please see Ms. Wiltshire for specific questions or contact the sponsor directly.

Association of BC Land Surveyours, Kootenay Group ($750)
CRITERIA: For a student entering a full time geomatics program at a Canadian college, technical institute or university. Student must plan to work within the land surveying profession, preferably in BC, and must be from the Kootenay Region of BC.

Avalanche Skills Training Bursary ($750)
CRITERIA: For students who are interested in gaining skills in avalanche awareness and who may be planning to get into outdoor education, guiding or be safe recreationalists in our backcountry. Students need adequate ski or snowboard skills that are regular prerequisites for AST 1 & AST 2 or level 1 professional avalanche course. Training needs to be completed within the next ski season.

Bev Lapointe Memorial Scholarship for Women in Trades ($2000)
(Kootenay Career Development Society) Applicants must be registered as a full time or part time female student in the trades and be a permanent resident of the region that Kootenay Career Development Society serves (Nelson, Castlegar, Salmo, north shore to Kaslo and the Slocan Valley as far north as the Village of Slocan.
Open to any individual who self-identifies as a woman.

Construction, Maintenance and Allied Workers Local 2300 Bursary ($500)
Criteria: Bursaries of $500 each will be awarded to students in school districts within the east and west Kootenay who are pursuing an apprenticeship in Carpentry/Joinery of Millwright. Applicants must write a short essay between 300-500 words to explain why they are choosing a career in their chosen field.

Columbia Basin Trust - Youth Community Service Award (3 x $2000)
CRITERIA: Service and leadership to the community and strong academics.

CUPE Local 748 ($300)
CRITERIA: Son or daughter of a member of CUPE 748 and C+ average during final year. Attendance and punctuality, school participation and community involvement are considered.
HISTORY: Established in 1995 for deserving students who are sons or daughters of CUPE local 748 members and who are graduating from a high school within School District #8.

Ernie Gare Society ($500 to $1000)
CRITERIA: Outstanding athletic achievement throughout high school, maintain high academic and leadership qualities in school and community. Number of awards to be determined.
HISTORY: In memory of Ernie Gare, a sports enthusiast and coach who was very active in the Nelson community. Students are advised that they are able to use extra pages in their application and not be limited to the space provided in the application.

**new** Greg Bezaire Leadership and Community Minded Volunteer Scholarship ($1500)
CRITERIA: The successful candidate is a person who shows leadership by volunteering their time to make a difference in their community, and affecting others by doing so. This may be inside school, or outside in the community. The scholarship applicants will be evaluated on merit, not academic achievements.
HISTORY: Greg Bezaire was a true leader in the community, championing such boards as the Economic Development Commission, Co-Chair of both the Blewett and Trafalgar schools Parent advisory Committees and on the Board of Directors for Nelson Glacier Gymnastics. He had a passion for life and would help personally or professionally whenever or for whatever was needed, without hesitation. Greg battled a rare form of cancer with tenacity and positivity, but passed away on Jan 30th, 2019. Before he passed, this scholarship was created in his name, and he was proud and honored to be able to provide funding to help a worthwhile student.
Applicants must write a detailed letter introducing themselves and outlining their accomplishments and reasons why they feel they should be the recipient of this award. Applicants must also provide 2 reference letters, from a teacher and/or community member or outside agency confirming their participation and accomplishments. International Program Leadership & Cultural Integration Scholarship ($500 can be more than one awarded)
CRITERIA: Integrity, dedication, magnanimity, honesty, respect friendly and connected to friends from Canada, fair, assertive, sense of humour and cross cultural competence.

Kootenay Co-op Member Scholarship ($1000)
CRITERIA: This Scholarship is open to an active Co-op member, or the child of an active Co-op member. Applicants must make an effort to explain how their field of studies connects back the Co-op's vision, Mission and Values, and how this scholarship will make the world a better place.

A.F Timber Company - Kyle Levy - Pride In Logging Bursary ($1500)
An annual bursary of $1,500 to a student entering the field of logging or a full time forestry or trade program at a Canadian college, technical institute or university. Trades program defined as a British Columbia school offering heavy duty mechanics, professional truck driving, heavy duty machine operators course, welding course or similar training program that leads to employment within the logging industry. 1. Community Spirit Award
CRITERIA: Preference will be to a member in good standing of the Nelson and District Credit Union. For students that show demonstrated involvement in community, school, regional, provincial, national and international activities.
2. Aspire Student Achievement Award
CRITERIA: Preference will be to a member in good standing of the Nelson and District Credit Union. Student has obtained academic excellence in all study areas.
3. Student Leadership Award
CRITERIA: Preference will be to a member in good standing of the Nelson and District Credit Union. For students that have demonstrated strong leadership abilities recognized by peers and teachers.

CRITERIA: Male OR Female student pursuing post-secondary studies. Committed to gender equality and speaking out against bullying and violence against women. A person (male or female) who believes "My Strength is Not for Hurting" campaign/philosophy. Social responsibility/justice in school, creates a better school climate/culture to embrace diversity. Demonstrates a strong commitment to gender equality in actions & behaviour; role model & speaks out against bullying/violence against women/girls. Royal Canadian Legion Nelson Branch 51 ($500 to $750)
CRITERIA: Must be a veteran, child, grandchild or gread grandchild of any eligible personnel (see application for details)
Must be attending a college or university in BC, the Yukon, Calgary or Lethbride on a full time basis for a minimum of two consecutive semesters. Must prove financial need as outlined in the application form.

Ted Hargreaves Memorial Scholarship ($750)
CRITERIA: Preference given to a female hockey player of the Kootenay Wild and/or have acted in some capacity in forwarding the female hockey movement (e.g. coach, referee, etc).

West Kootenay Toy Run ($1000)
CRITERIA: A student who is in true financial need that would not be able to continue on to post-secondary without the help of the scholarship. Requires a hand written history explaining financial hardships, family circumstance, and your future educational goals
