Type 2 Community

Type Two Community Bursary, Scholarships and Awards are a mixture of opportunities for a variety of students with different backgrounds, experiences, skills and community connections.  Please read each of the descriptions below and decide which ones are most suitable for you to apply for - they are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference.  Please see Ms. Wiltshire for specific questions or contact the sponsor directly.
 
Please read carefully where to submit the applications, and to the different deadlines for some community sponsors.

Unless otherwise indicated, all applications go to Susan Lakeman in the office.

Association of BC Land Surveyours, Kootenay Group

CRITERIA: For a student entering a full time geomatics program at a Canadian college, technical institute or university. Student must plan to work within the land surveying profession, preferably in BC, and must be from the Kootenay Region of BC.

Avalanche Skills Training Bursary

CRITERIA: For students who are interested in gaining skills in avalanche awareness and who may be planning to get into outdoor education, guiding or be safe recreationalists in our backcountry. Students need adequate ski or snowboard skills that are regular prerequisites for AST 1 & AST 2 or level 1 professional avalanche course. Training needs to be completed within the next ski season.

Bev Lapointe Memorial Scholarship for Women in Trades

(Kootenay Career Development Society) Applicants must be registered as a full time or part time female student in the trades and be a permanent resident of the region that Kootenay Career Development Society serves (Nelson, Castlegar, Salmo, north shore to Kaslo and the Slocan Valley as far north as the Village of Slocan. 

Open to any individual who self-identifies as a woman.

**NEW** Construction, Maintenance and Allied Workers Local 2300 Bursary

Criteria:  Bursaries of $500 each will be awarded to students in school districts within the east and west Kootenay who are pursuing an apprenticeship in Carpentry/Joinery of Millwright.  Applicants must write a short essay between 300-500 words to explain why they are choosing a career in their chosen field.

Columbia Basin Trust - Youth Community Service Award

CRITERIA: Service and leadership to the community and strong academics.

​CUPE Local 748

CRITERIA: Son or daughter of a member of CUPE 748 and C+ average during final year. Attendance and punctuality, school participation and community involvement are considered.
HISTORY: Established in 1995 for deserving students who are sons or daughters of CUPE local 748 members and who are graduating from a high school within School District #8.

Embark 'GAP YEAR' Award

CRITERIA: For students who are planning to live in a foreign country (excluding the USA) for 6 to 12 months after graduation for travel, study, to volunteer, or work.
HISTORY: Established by LVR alumni.

Ernie Gare Society

CRITERIA: Outstanding athletic achievement throughout high school, maintain high academic and leadership qualities in school and community.  Number of awards to be determined.
HISTORY: In memory of Ernie Gare, a sports enthusiast and coach who was very active in the Nelson community. Students are advised that they are able to use extra pages in their application and not be limited to the space provided in the application.

International Program Leadership & Cultural Integration Scholarship

CRITERIA:  Integrity, dedication, magnanimity, honesty, respect friendly and connected to friends from Canada, fair, assertive, sense of humour and cross cultural competence.

Kootenay Co-op Member Scholarship

CRITERIA: This Scholarship is open to an  active Co-op member, or the child of an active Co-op member. Preference will be given, but not limited to applicants who are pursuing studies in the following areas: food, agriculture, cooperatives, community development, environmental studies, or alternative health.

Kootenay District Council Bursary (CUPE)

CRITERIA: Awarded to graduating son or daughter of a K.D.C. affiliated member. Applicant must be pursing post-secondary studies at a community college, university, or institute of technology.

CRITERIA: Open to Grade 12 students who have shown exceptional leadership and demonstrated commitment to their community.

​A.F Timber Company -  Kyle Levy - Pride In Logging Bursary

An annual bursary of $1,500 to a student entering the field of logging or a full time forestry or trade program at a Canadian college, technical institute or university.  Trades program defined as a British Columbia school offering heavy duty mechanics, professional truck driving, heavy duty machine operators course, welding course or similar training program that leads to employment within the logging industry.

The family of Neil Muth and Columbia Basin Trust are pleased to announce a new scholarship for people who have triumphed over adversity and want to pursue post-secondary education.

Nelson and District Credit Union Awards (3 awards)

1. Community Spirit Award
CRITERIA: Preference will be to a member in good standing of the Nelson and District Credit Union. For students that show demonstrated involvement in community, school, regional, provincial, national and international activities.

2. Aspire Student Achievement Award
CRITERIA: Preference will be to a member in good standing of the Nelson and District Credit Union. Student has obtained academic excellence in all study areas.

3. Student Leadership Award
CRITERIA: Preference will be to a member in good standing of the Nelson and District Credit Union. For students that have demonstrated strong leadership abilities recognized by peers and teachers.

Rebecca Vecchio Memorial Bursary

CRITERIA: Male OR Female student pursuing post-secondary studies.  Committed to gender equality and speaking out against bullying and violence against women.  A person (male or female) who believes "My Strength is Not for Hurting" campaign/philosophy. Social responsibility/justice in school, creates a better school climate/culture to embrace diversity. Demonstrates a strong commitment to gender equality in actions & behaviour; role model & speaks out against bullying/violence against women/girls. Further studies include social work, counselling, mental health, teaching, etc.

CRITERIA: Students furthering their education at Selkirk College. Preference given to relative of Legion member. Evidence of working to potential. Evidence of financial need is required.

CRITERIA: Applicants must have attended St. Joseph School, excluding kindergarten.

Ted Hargreaves Memorial Scholarship

CRITERIA:  Preference given to a female hockey player of the Kootenay Wild and/or have acted in some capacity in forwarding the female hockey movement (e.g. coach, referee, etc).

CRITERIA: A student who is in true financial need that would not be able to continue on to post-secondary without the help of the scholarship. Requires a hand written history explaining financial hardships, family circumstance, and your future educational goals
