Local Awards Requiring Their Own Application

Type Two Community Bursary, Scholarships and Awards are a mixture of opportunities for a variety of students with different backgrounds, experiences, skills and community connections.  Review all the information below and decide which ones are most suitable for you to apply for - they are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference.

AVALANCHE SKILLS TRAINING BURSARY

AMOUNT: $750 (2 awards)

CRITERIA: For students who are interested in gaining skills in avalanche awareness and who may be planning to get into outdoor education, guiding or be safe recreationalists in our backcountry. Students need adequate ski or snowboard skills that are regular prerequisites for AST 1 & AST 2 or level 1 professional avalanche course. Training needs to be completed within the next ski season.

BEV LAPOINTE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN IN TRADES (Kootenay Career Development Society)

AMOUNT: $3000 (1 award may not be LVR) The winner will be selected in July 2023

CRITERIA: Applicants must be registered as a full time or part time female student in a trades training program and be a permanent resident of the region that Kootenay Career Development Society serves. Open to any individual who self-identifies as a woman.

COLUMBIA BASIN TRUST YOUTH COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

AMOUNT: $2000 (up to 3 awards)

CRITERIA: Columbia Basin Trust’s Youth Community Service Awards are designed to reward and encourage volunteerism of Columbia Basin students. These awards are not based on academic achievement but rather volunteer community service activity. Eligible recipients therefore include students not intending to attend post-secondary education. CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE AND ALLIED WORKERS LOCAL 2300 BURSARY

AMOUNT: $500 (Average of 6)

CRITERIA:  Bursaries of $500 each will be awarded to students in school districts within the east and west Kootenay who are pursuing an apprenticeship in Carpentry/Joinery or Millwright.  Applicants must write a short essay between 300-500 words to explain why they are choosing a career in their chosen field.

CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE AND ALLIED WORKERS LOCAL 1237 Pre-Apprentice BURSARY

AMOUNT: $500 (on average 6 awards)

CRITERIA: Enrollment in a carpentry pre-apprenticeship program. Be a resident of British Columbia. Submit a 500-word essay on why you want to be a carpenter.  To apply for this bursary please provide your name, phone number, the learning institute you are attending, and the dates your course is running, along with your essay to reception@cmaw.ca please put Local 1237 Pre-Apprentice Bursary in the subject line of the email.

CUPE LOCAL 748 BURSARY

AMOUNT: $300 to a child of CUPE Local 748 member

CRITERIA: Son or daughter of a member of CUPE 748. Applicants must be graduating from high school and pursuing post-secondary education at a Community College, University or Institute of Technology. Proof of registration from a post-secondary institution is required before funds will be released.

ERNIE GARE ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $3000 (2 Awards)

CRITERIA: Outstanding athletic achievement throughout high school, maintain high academic and leadership qualities in school and community. Please refer to the application for more information on the specific criteria required. HISTORY: In memory of Ernie Gare, a sports enthusiast and coach who was very active in the Nelson community. Students are advised that they can use extra pages in their application and not be limited to the space provided in the application.

GREG BEZAIRE LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY MINDED VOLUNTEER SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $1500 (1 award)

CRITERIA:  The successful candidate is a person who shows leadership by volunteering their time to make a difference in their community and affecting others by doing so.  This may be inside school, or outside in the community.  The scholarship applicants will be evaluated on merit, not academic achievements.

HISTORY:  Greg Bezaire was a true leader in the community, championing such boards as the Economic Development Commission, Co-Chair of both the Blewett and Trafalgar schools Parent advisory Committees and on the Board of Directors for Nelson Glacier Gymnastics.  He had a passion for life and would help personally or professionally whenever or for whatever was needed, without hesitation.  Greg battled a rare form of cancer with tenacity and positivity but passed away on Jan 30th, 2019.  Before he passed, this scholarship was created in his name, and he was proud and honored to be able to provide funding to help a worthwhile student.

Applicants must write a detailed letter introducing themselves and outlining their accomplishments and reasons why they feel they should be the recipient of this award.  Applicants must also provide 2 reference letters, from a teacher and/or community member or outside agency confirming their participation and accomplishments.  Applicants can scan/email their reference letters with their application.

GREG STACEY MEMORIAL BURSARY

For 2023 Graduates we are offering a new bursary, that takes a more supportive role in helping a student achieve their goals.

The Greg Stacey Memorial Bursary seeks to offer support to students who would benefit from a beneficiary believing in them.  In addition to the $1000 award, the family also wishes to offer the opportunity to meet about the recipient’s goals and aspirations and to make introductions where we can which might support them in moving towards these goals. (This is an optional additional benefit that the recipient may choose to embrace or decline.)

Applicants can be studying in any post-secondary field.  Academic achievement is of value but is not our top criteria to receive this award. We are more interested in heart and vision.

HARROP-PROCTER COMMUNITY CO-OPERATIVE SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $2000

CRITERIA: The Harrop-Procter Community Cooperative Scholarship will be awarded to a secondary school graduate who is a resident of the Harrop-Procter Community, or a post-secondary student from the area. Applicants must be enrolled in a 1st year program, pursuing an education through a Technical/Trades School, College, or University, or already studying at a post-secondary institution. Studies related to Forestry, Environmental Studies, and Sciences will be given priority consideration, but other areas of study will be considered where appropriate. KERRY DYCK MEMORIAL BURSARY (Nelson Soccer Association)

AMOUNT: $1000 (2 AWARDS)

CRITERIA: Based on dedication to soccer and service to community as well as academic and athletic achievement. Please see website for more information

KOOTENAY CO-OP MEMBER SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $3000 (minimum of 3)

CRITERIA: This Scholarship is open to an active Co-op member, or the child of an active Co-op member. Preference will be given, but not limited to applicants who are pursuing studies in the following areas: food, agriculture, cooperatives, community development, environmental studies, or alternative health. KOOTENAY DISTRICT COUNCIL - WOMEN’S COMMITTEE (CUPE)
AMOUNT: TBA

CRITERIA: Awarded to graduating son or daughter of a KDC affiliated CUPE member. Applicant must be pursuing post-secondary studies at a community college, university, or institute of technology. Applicant will be required to write an essay on “The achievements of an outstanding woman in your community”.

KOOTENAY SAVINGS COMMUNITY CHAMPS BURSARIES  
AMOUNT: $2000 (6 awards for the Kootenay Region)

CRITERIA: Open to local Grade 12 students who have shown exceptional leadership and an amazing commitment to their communities.

KYLE LEVY - PRIDE IN LOGGING BURSARY (A.F Timber Co Ltd)
​AMOUNT: $1500 (1 award)

CRITERIA: An annual bursary of $1,500 to a student entering the field of logging or a full-time forestry or trade program at a Canadian college, technical institute or university.  Trades program defined as a British Columbia school offering heavy duty mechanics, professional truck driving, heavy duty machine operators' course, welding course or similar training program that leads to employment within the logging industry. MERCER CELGAR SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARYS 

CRITERIA: Completed applications, including all requested documentation, must be received in a sealed envelope marked "Scholarship Application" at the Human Resources Office, Mercer Celgar, PO Box 1000, 1921 Arrow Lakes Drive Castlegar BC V1N 3H9.

NEIL MUTH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $10,000 (divided between 2-4 applicants within the Columbia basin trust area)

The scholarship is awarded by the Muth family, administered by Columbia Basin Trust and made possible by the generous donations of family, friends, local governments and organizations.

CRITERIA: This scholarship is for people who have triumphed over adversity and wish to pursue post-secondary education. This is an opportunity for someone to demonstrate their individual determination, future goals and self-motivation. NELSON AND DISTRICT CREDIT UNION AWARDS FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS OF LV ROGERS (3 awards)

Recipients will be chosen based on the unique criteria for each award and the unique situations of each school. All applicants must be attending an accredited post-secondary institution upon graduating. Preference is given to students that are active NDCU members and in good-standing.
1. Nelson and District Credit Union Aspire Scholarship

AMOUNT: $500
CRITERIA: The recipient of this award will have achieved academic excellence in all areas of study at LV Rogers.

2. Nelson and District Credit Union Student Leadership Award

AMOUNT: $500
CRITERIA: The recipient of this award will be recognized amongst their peers and teachers as demonstrating strong leadership abilities at school. This award is based on leadership qualities and not academic achievement. The applicant must identify any activities related to this award.

3. Nelson and District Credit Union Community Spirit Award

AMOUNT: $500
CRITERIA: The recipient of this award will exemplify community spirit by a student. Their involvement may relate to commitments to the school, regional, provincial, national or international community. This award is based on volunteer and community service and not academic achievement. The applicant must identify any activities related to this award.

NELSON DISTRICT TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION MEMBER’S BURSARIES

AMOUNT: Varies 

CRITERIA: Child or grandchild of an active or retired N.D.T.A. members. Intended for university, college or trade schools. Please see below application for all criteria needed.

NELSON ITALIAN CANADIAN SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP 

AMOUNT: $750 each (2 awards) Note: Value of each award is determined annually
CRITERIA: The scholarships are to be awarded to the child(ren) of an NICS member in good standing who is a current graduate of a Nelson area secondary school to assist them to pursue careers in post-secondary education.

If, in a particular year, there are no candidates whose parents are NICS members, the scholarship(s) may be awarded to students who have Italian heritage or to other deserving students.

There are two scholarships available to be awarded.

•              The first is for academic post-secondary studies leading to a degree. 

•              The second is for trades/vocational or fine arts programs leading to a diploma.

The written application should be submitted to the LV Rogers Office, it will then be passed on to the LV Rogers Scholarship committee.

NELSON REGIONAL SPORTS COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: Determined by Nelson Regional Sports Council

CRITERIA: Awarded to one graduating SD8 student per calendar year who has shown worthwhile contributions to sport as an athlete, and/or official, or club/district administrator.

NELSON ROTARY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS/BURSARYS
​​AMOUNT: $1000 (multiple)

CRITERIA: This bursary is open to all students. Bursary may be awarded to any student planning to enter post-secondary study in academics, trades & technologies, arts, and other areas. The criterion for awarding these bursaries is a service, and/or volunteer activities to school or community. The Rotary Club of Nelson is part of a worldwide organization whose members believe that they should serve their communities and promote international understanding. One local Rotary project is to provide bursaries to high school students. The Circle Foundation was established to serve Nelson and Area including the awarding of bursaries. These bursaries are supported through fundraising, generous donations from private donors and Rotary Club members.

TED HARGREAVES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
AMOUNT: Determined by Hargreaves Board with Osprey Foundation

CRITERIA:  Preference given to a female hockey player of the Kootenay Wild and/or have acted in some capacity in forwarding the female hockey movement (e.g., coach, referee, etc.).  Ted Hargreaves was an amateur and professional hockey player, coach and teacher. This scholarship was established to continue the legacy of community involvement through sport that epitomized Ted's 35 years in Nelson.

UNITED STEELWORKERS LOCAL 480 SCHOLARSHIP & BURSARY

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT: $500 

BURSARY AMOUNT: $250

CRITERIA: Demonstrated academic ability and need. To qualify the students must write an essay of 500 - 1000 words on "What impact has Local 480 had in the community, workplace safety or workers' rights? Also, if any, what role has local 480 played in your family or families that you know?" Essays must be either emailed Jo-Lynne at jo-lynne@usw480.com or submitted to Local 480.

WEST KOOTENAY TOY RUN ASSOCIATION BURSARY
​AMOUNT: $1,000 (5 Awards, may not be LVR)

CRITERIA: For students who are experiencing true financial hardship due to circumstances beyond their control. These are student who without our help, would not be able to continue their post-secondary education. Not a student with top marks, but rather a student who has set realistic and achievable goals for themselves.
