Type Two Community Bursary, Scholarships and Awards are a mixture of opportunities for a variety of students with different backgrounds, experiences, skills and community connections.  Review all the information below and decide which ones are most suitable for you to apply for - they are listed in alphabetical order for easy reference.

ANNE WARD SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

AMOUNT: Depends on number of applicants.

CRITERIA: The Anne Ward Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a high school graduate who is a resident from the Outlet area (Longbeach, Harrop, Sunshine Bay, Balfour, Procter, and Queens Bay). Bursaries will be awarded to local post-secondary students if applicable (dependent on the number of primary award applicants) and at the discretion of the HPCC Scholarship sub-committee. Applicants must be enrolled in a first year program, pursuing education through a technical/trades school, college, or university, or already studying at a post-secondary institution. Studies related to Forestry, Environmental Studies, and Sciences will be given priority consideration, but other areas of study will be considered where appropriate.

AVALANCHE SKILLS TRAINING BURSARY

AMOUNT: $750 (3 awards)

CRITERIA: For students who are interested in gaining skills in avalanche awareness and who may be planning to get into outdoor education, guiding or be safe recreationalists in our backcountry. Students need adequate ski or snowboard skills that are regular prerequisites for AST 1 & AST 2 or level 1 professional avalanche course. Training needs to be completed within the next ski season.

BEV LAPOINTE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN IN TRADES (Kootenay Career Development Society)

AMOUNT: $3000 (1 award may not be LVR) The winner will be selected in July 2026

CRITERIA: Applicants must be registered as a full time or part time female student in a trades training program and be a permanent resident of the region that Kootenay Career Development Society serves. Open to any individual who self-identifies as a woman.

CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN, NELSON & DISTRICT CLUB - ELIZABETH WALLACH SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $1000 (1 award)

CRITERIA: A young woman entering post-secondary education, good academic standing, community involvement and financial need. Please contact Cathy Leugner, Past President, for more information.

CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE AND ALLIED WORKERS LOCAL 2300 BURSARY

AMOUNT:  $500 - 2 per district in Kootenay Region 

CRITERIA:  Bursaries of $500 each will be awarded to students in school districts within the east and west Kootenay who are pursuing an apprenticeship in Carpentry/Joinery or Millwright.

CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE AND ALLIED WORKERS LOCAL 1237 Pre-Apprentice BURSARY

AMOUNT: $500 (on average 6 awards) may not be LVR

CRITERIA: Enrollment in a carpentry pre-apprenticeship program. Be a resident of British Columbia. 

Application: Submit a 500-word essay on why you want to be a carpenter.  To apply for this bursary please provide your name, phone number, the learning institute you are attending, and the dates your course is running, along with your essay to email please put Local 1237 Pre-Apprentice Bursary in the subject line of the email.

CUPE LOCAL 748 BURSARY

AMOUNT: $300 to a child of CUPE Local 748 member

CRITERIA: Son or daughter of a member of CUPE 748. Applicants must be graduating from high school and pursuing post-secondary education at a Community College, University or Institute of Technology. Proof of registration from a post-secondary institution is required before funds will be released.

​DELANE H. REED - FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES #22 SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $500 (2 awards)

CRITERIA: One male and one female furthering their education in non-academic studies (trade school, business administration, etc.).We look to people of al walks of life and educational goals.
HISTORY: In memory of Delane H. Reed, a Past President and longtime active member of Nelson Lodge #22.

ERNIE GARE ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $3000 (2 Awards)

CRITERIA: Outstanding athletic achievement throughout high school, maintain high academic and leadership qualities in school and community.  Candidates must have participated in at least one sport during grades 11&12, maintained a minimum or above C+ average and passed all academic courses, see website for more information about Ernie Gare a sports enthusiast and coach who was very active in the community.

GREG STACEY MEMORIAL BURSARY

AMOUNT: $1000

CRITERIA: The Greg Stacey Memorial Bursary seeks to offer support to students who would benefit from a beneficiary believing in them.  In addition to the  award, the family also wishes to offer the opportunity to meet about the recipient’s goals and aspirations and to make introductions where we can which might support them in moving towards these goals. Applicants can be studying in any post-secondary field.  Academic achievement is of value but is not our top criteria to receive this award. We are more interested in heart and vision.

IODE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

AMOUNT: $1500 (3 awards)

CRITERIA: This scholarship opportunity is for students who are interested in and pursuing studies in fine arts, the trades or technology. Please provide detailed information for the sponsor using the application below.

JAMES HAMILTON ALLEN SCHOLARSHIP, NELSON UNITED CHURCH

AMOUNT: $500-1500 (1 or 2 awards)

CRITERIA:  Male student who is graduating from grade 12 and expressing the intention of acquiring higher education at a Canadian college or university, entering a helping profession (medicine, social work, psychology, environmental studies,  ministry, etc.)

KERRY DYCK MEMORIAL BURSARY (Nelson Soccer Association)

KOOTENAY CO-OP MEMBER SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $3000 (minimum of 3)

CRITERIA: This Scholarship is open to an active Co-op member, or the child of an active Co-op member. Preference will be given, but not limited to applicants who are pursuing studies in the following areas: food, agriculture, cooperatives, community development, environmental studies, or alternative health.

KOOTENAY DISTRICT COUNCIL BURSARY (CUPE)

KOOTENAY DISTRICT COUNCIL - WOMEN’S COMMITTEE (CUPE)
AMOUNT: TBA

CRITERIA: Awarded to graduating son or daughter of a KDC affiliated CUPE member. Applicant must be pursuing post-secondary studies at a community college, university, or institute of technology. Applicant will be required to write an essay on “The achievements of an outstanding woman in your community”.

KOOTENAY LAKE DENTAL SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $500.00 (1 award)

CRITERIA:   A student who excels both academically and in the community. Answer/submit the following questions to the email linked in the application section below.

KOOTENAY SAVINGS COMMUNITY CHAMPS BURSARIES  
AMOUNT: $2000 (6 awards for the Kootenay Region)

CRITERIA: Open to local Grade 12 who jump at the chance to make a dedicated commitment to enriching the lives of others in their community, show outstanding leadership abilities or make contributions in volunteering, mentoring,  community service, affecting positive change and personal development and growth. Students must be a member of Kootenay Savings Credit Union to be eligible.

KYLE LEVY - PRIDE IN LOGGING BURSARY (A.F Timber Co Ltd)

AMOUNT: $500 (2 awards)

CRITERIA: A.F. Timber Co Ltd, is pleased to offer the Kyle Levy – Forestry & Trade Bursary for students entering first or second year full time Forestry Program or Forestry supported Trade* Program at a Canadian College, Technical Institute or University.  Student must be entering or enrolled in, a full time Forestry or Trade* program this upcoming fall, plan to work within Forestry or a Trade and must be from the Kootenay Region of BC.

Maia Vezina Memorial Education Award

AMOUNT: $500.00 (1 award)

CRITERIA: The Maia Vezina Education Award will be given out annually to a graduating student of LVR entering post secondary in the field of Education. The applicant is asked to write a minimum 250 word essay describing their reason for wanting to pursue their dream of becoming an educator and their goals for the future.

MERCER CELGAR SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARYS 

CRITERIA: Completed applications, including all requested documentation, must be received in a sealed envelope marked "Scholarship Application" at the Human Resources Office, Mercer Celgar, PO Box 1000, 1921 Arrow Lakes Drive Castlegar BC V1N 3H9.

Applicants must provide:

  • A Separate document which briefly describes their need and why they feel they are deserving of this award.
  • Fully completed application form.
  • An interim transcript of all grade 11 and grade 12 courses and marks, signed by the school counselor or school principal.

NEIL MUTH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $2,500.00 to $5,000.00 (divided between 2-4 applicants within the Columbia basin trust area)

The scholarship is awarded by the Muth family, administered by Columbia Basin Trust and made possible by the generous donations of family, friends, local governments and organizations.

CRITERIA: This scholarship is for people who have triumphed over adversity and wish to pursue post-secondary education. This is an opportunity for someone to demonstrate their individual determination, future goals and self-motivation. NELSON AND DISTRICT CREDIT UNION AWARDS FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS OF LV ROGERS (3 awards)

Recipients will be chosen based on the unique criteria for each award and the unique situations of each school. All applicants must be attending an accredited post-secondary institution upon graduating. Preference is given to students that are active NDCU members and in good-standing.


1. Nelson and District Credit Union Aspire Scholarship

AMOUNT: $1000
CRITERIA: The recipient of this award will have achieved academic excellence in all areas of study at LV Rogers.

2. Nelson and District Credit Union Student Leadership Award

AMOUNT: $1000
CRITERIA: The recipient of this award will be recognized amongst their peers and teachers as demonstrating strong leadership abilities at school. This award is based on leadership qualities and not academic achievement. The applicant must identify any activities related to this award.

3. Nelson and District Credit Union Community Spirit Award

AMOUNT: $1000
CRITERIA: The recipient of this award will exemplify community spirit by a student. Their involvement may relate to commitments to the school, regional, provincial, national or international community. This award is based on volunteer and community service and not academic achievement. The applicant must identify any activities related to this award.

NELSON DISTRICT TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION MEMBER’S BURSARIES

AMOUNT: Varies 

CRITERIA: Child or grandchild of an active or retired N.D.T.A. members. Intended for university, college or trade schools. Please see below application for all criteria needed.

NELSON  ITALIAN CANADIAN SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP 

AMOUNT: TBA (2 awards) Note: Value of each award is determined annually

CRITERIA: The scholarships are to be awarded to the child(ren) of an NICS member in good standing who is a current graduate of a Nelson area secondary school to assist them to pursue careers in post-secondary education.

If, in a particular year, there are no candidates whose parents are NICS members, the scholarship(s) may be awarded to students who have Italian heritage or to other deserving students.

There are two scholarships available to be awarded.

•              The first is for academic post-secondary studies leading to a degree. 

•              The second is for trades/vocational or fine arts programs leading to a diploma.

The candidate(s) must demonstrate:

  • that their academic record reflects their scholastic goals, 

  • the potential and desire to continue their studies,

  • that they have been accepted to the post-secondary institution of their choice.

The scholarship may be deferred up to eighteen (18) months following their graduation from secondary school.

NELSON MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $500 EACH (2 awards)

CRITERIA: Applicants must have been a NMHA registrant within the past two-five years and for a minimum of three years - unless they have played at a higher level(KI, BCHL or CHL) but did play prior with NMHA. Must present proof of post secondary enrollment and payment to the NMH president to receive the funds for scholarships.

NELSON REGIONAL SPORTS COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $500.00 (1 award to student within SD8)

CRITERIA: Awarded to one graduating SD8 student per calendar year who has shown worthwhile contributions to sport as an athlete, and/or official, or club/district administrator.

APPLICATION: Nelson Regional Sports Council Scholarship - Please submit application to the Nelson Regional Sports council by email (mgbonikowsky@outlook.com).

NELSON ROAD KINGS SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: $750 (2 awards)
CRITERIA: Support for a student going into a trade. Example, automotive repair (mechanical or body), welding, electrical, plumbing, fabrication, etc. Other post secondary diplomas/degrees can apply as well.

NELSON ROTARY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS/BURSARYS
​​AMOUNT: $1000 (multiple)

CRITERIA: This bursary is open to all students. Bursary may be awarded to any student planning to enter post-secondary study in academics, trades & technologies, arts, and other areas. The criterion for awarding these bursaries is a service, and/or volunteer activities to school or community. The Rotary Club of Nelson is part of a worldwide organization whose members believe that they should serve their communities and promote international understanding. One local Rotary project is to provide bursaries to high school students. The Circle Foundation was established to serve Nelson and Area including the awarding of bursaries. These bursaries are supported through fundraising, generous donations from private donors and Rotary Club members.

NELSON WALDORF SCHOOL ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP for LV Rogers School
AMOUNT: $500 (2 Scholarships) 

CRITERIA: 

  • Be registered at a high school and Complete Grade 12 curriculum 
  • Have attended Nelson Waldorf School

  • Submit a response to questions (see attached application) and submit a 300 to 400 words essay (see attached application)

  • Meet with the Scholarship Committee, if requested 

  • Give permission for the essay to be referenced “Alum Perspective” for NWS Website

  • Be willing to speak to parents as an Alum of NWS, if requested

Rob Wright Scholarship Fund 

AMOUNT: $2500

CRITERIA: Student who has contributed to the sports and athletic community as a volunteer, player or coach at the school and community level.

Rosanne Wallace Memorial Scholarship 

AMOUNT: $1000

CRITERIA: Female student who plays hockey and is pursuing post secondary education. See eligibility and application on the PDF link below.

ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION Nelson Branch 51

Poppy Fund Bursary Application

AMOUNT: $1,000.00 (2 Awards)

CRITERIA: Preference to be given to those descendants of Canadian Forces ex-service or current personnel. However, other applicants may also be considered if financial need is proven. Once the bursary is granted by the Legion, the student has until September 1st of the following year to submit the enrolment documentation, otherwise the bursary will expire.

 

ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL BURSARY
AMOUNT: Varies

CRITERIA: Applicants must have attended St. Joseph School, excluding kindergarten.

TED HARGREAVES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


AMOUNT: Determined by Hargreaves Board with Osprey Foundation

CRITERIA:  Preference given to a female hockey player of the Kootenay Wild and/or have acted in some capacity in forwarding the female hockey movement (e.g., coach, referee, etc.).  Ted Hargreaves was an amateur and professional hockey player, coach and teacher. This scholarship was established to continue the legacy of community involvement through sport that epitomized Ted's 35 years in Nelson.

TELUS AMBASSADORS' BURSARY

AMOUNT:  $1000 (1 award)

CRITERIA: Preference given to applicant with immediate family connection to Telus/BC Tel (current or retired) if yes, enter the name of the family connection, student needs to maintain minimum 70% average in grades 11 and 12 courses and plans to attend post secondary. Student should have leadership, community service and/or involvement in the arts.

UNITED STEELWORKERS LOCAL 480 SCHOLARSHIP & BURSARY

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT: $500 

BURSARY AMOUNT: $250

CRITERIA: Demonstrated academic ability and need. To qualify the students must write an essay of 500 - 1000 words on "What impact has Local 480 had in the community, workplace safety or workers' rights? Also, if any, what role has local 480 played in your family or families that you know?" Essays must be either emailed Jo-Lynne at email or submitted to Local 480.

WEST KOOTENAY TOY RUN ASSOCIATION BURSARY
​AMOUNT: $1,000 (5 Awards, in the West Kootenay Area - may not be LVR)

The bursary is only valid for 1 year. It will expire August 1, 2027, so make sure to use it before then.

CRITERIA: For students who are experiencing true financial hardship due to circumstances beyond their control. These are student who without our help, would not be able to continue their post-secondary education. Not a student with top marks, but rather a student who has set realistic and achievable goals for themselves.
